The course, first developed by representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment Canada, Trent University and Ducks Unlimited, has recently been thoroughly updated with new material and field sites, reflecting changes in wetland restoration theory and techniques. This introductory course introduces resource practitioners to the principles and methods of restoration and their application in the field.
The Water Management and Wetland Restoration Training Course will teach participants to identify potential wetland restoration sites, and explores wetland complexes and several watersheds in Eastern Ontario. Successes and failures in wetland restoration are viewed and discussed with landowners, stakeholders and site managers who will be on hand to share their experiences. Participants engage in group learning, carrying out field exercises and presentations.
The principal instructor is Kevin Erwin of Kevin L. Erwin Consulting Ecologist, Inc., an internationally recognized authority on wetland restoration with over 35 years of experience in the field. He is joined by Dan Mansell of 'asiOtus' Consulting, a member of the course development team and former employee of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
The collaborative nature of the development of the course materials ensures a well balanced approach to the management of wetland restoration within the framework of existing policies and guidelines in practice in the Province of Ontario. Various types of restorations in a range of management situations are examined throughout the course. At each site, and on the road, exercises to challenge participants and encourage a learning atmosphere are undertaken.
